Quick start checklist
- Visit Ledger.com/start and download Ledger Live.
- Unbox and inspect your Ledger device for tamper evidence.
- Install Ledger Live, connect the device and initialize as new or restore.
- Write down your recovery phrase (24 words) on the supplied card or a secure metal backup.
- Set a PIN on the device; enable passphrase/advanced options only if you understand the trade-offs.
- Verify every transaction on the device screen before approving.
Unboxing & authenticity checks
On arrival, inspect packaging and seals. Ledger packaging includes tamper-evident elements — cross-check with official images at Ledger.com. Look for missing items or damage; if something seems off, contact Ledger support before powering the device. Purchasing only from Ledger's official store or authorized resellers reduces the risk of receiving compromised hardware.
Download Ledger Live
Ledger Live is the official desktop and mobile application to manage your Ledger hardware device. Download it from Ledger.com/start or from official app stores. Verify the URL and consider checking release notes and signatures where available. Install the app, then follow the in-app instructions to continue setup.
Initialize your Ledger device
Connect your Ledger device using the supplied cable. Ledger Live will detect the device and guide you to initialize it. Choose to set up as a new device to generate a fresh recovery phrase or restore an existing wallet with a recovery phrase. Never skip firmware verification steps: Ledger Live will prompt for firmware updates — apply them only through the official app.
Recovery phrase — your key to recovery
Ledger devices use a 24-word recovery phrase (BIP39/BIP44-compatible) to back up private keys. Write the words exactly in order on the supplied recovery sheet or transfer them to a durable metal backup. Do not photograph, copy to a cloud service, or store digitally. Consider geographically separating copies for added resilience, but keep them in secure, access-controlled locations.
PIN and optional passphrase
Set a strong PIN to protect the device from unauthorized use. For advanced privacy, Ledger supports an optional passphrase feature that creates hidden wallets. Passphrases increase security but are not stored anywhere — losing a passphrase means losing access. If you enable a passphrase, document recovery procedures and store secrets securely.
Using Ledger Live: send & receive
To receive funds, use the receiving address shown in Ledger Live and verify it on the device screen. For sending, create the transaction inside Ledger Live and confirm details on the device before approving. Always check the destination address on-device to avoid malware that tampers with on-screen addresses. Consider enabling advanced features like transaction batching and custom fees only if you understand the implications.
Firmware updates & device care
Firmware updates include important fixes and should be applied via Ledger Live when prompted. The device requires physical confirmation for firmware installation, stopping remote attackers from forcing updates. Keep Ledger Live and your operating system up to date, and avoid connecting your hardware to untrusted devices or public charging stations.
Best practices & security
Always confirm addresses and amounts on the hardware screen before approving.
Download Ledger Live and firmware only from Ledger.com.
Use metal backups for fire/water resistance for long-term storage.
Test a recovery with a small transfer before relying on the backup fully.
Troubleshooting
If the device is not detected, try a different USB port or cable and restart Ledger Live. On mobile, ensure your OS permissions are correct and the cable supports data transfer. If firmware or communication errors persist, consult the official support docs first. Never share your recovery phrase or PIN with anyone claiming to be support — Ledger support will never ask for your recovery words.
